On August 1, 2024, a nationwide “Hunger Protest” erupted in response to soaring inflation, which exceeded 30%, and food prices that have skyrocketed by up to 300% over the past few years. The 10-day protest was a powerful demonstration of the overwhelming suffering that continues to grip the nation. The roots of this crisis lie in systemic issues, including political corruption, that have persisted for decades. As a result, the average Nigerian faces worsening conditions that extend far beyond hunger, affecting their overall quality of life—particularly for women, who bear a disproportionate share of the burden.
